When I was in medical school, I suffered from moderate acne that refused to go away no matter what I tried. This made me obsessed with clear skin and now that I've achieved this, I'm still always searching for good skincare products and anyways that led me to buying this book: 6 Weeks to Sensational Skin: Dr. Loretta's Beauty Camp Handbook for Your Freshest Face. I just finished reading it last week.
The author is a voluntary professor of dermatology. She builds up the information gradually over a 6-week period and uses terms that everyone can understand. She also discusses the essential ingredients to look for when buying skin products depending on your skin needs or concerns. I also researched these ingredients online and found that she was right. Some of these ingredients include rice proteins, neuropeptides, soy proteins, lipids (e.g ceramides, phospholipids), peptides, yeast extract, etc. The list is endless!
After reading this book, you will never buy any skin product that does nothing for your skin! I went with this book to the department store and I discovered that most of those hyped anti-aging products don't have a lot of these ingredients. There is also some advice on the use of hair products, make up, over-the-counter teeth whitening strips, cosmetic/dermatologic in-office procedures, etc.
Although she made a few recommendations on products containing these ingredients (e.g CeraVe and Elizabeth Arden's ceramide line), she did not do a good job in this area. She has a product line (which she does not advertise in the book) but I'm almost inclined to think that she did this so readers could buy her products. All in all, it made a enlightening read.
